Anne Bonny

Anne Bonny (Bonney - I've seen it spelt both ways) along with her companion Mary Read were/are the most famous women pirates in history.

Anne was born in the late 1600's in County Cork, Ireland, the illegitimate daughter of a well to do Lawyer, William Cormac and his housemaid. They immigrated to America and settled on a plantation in Charleston, SC.

As historians note Anne "grew up into a strapping, boisterous girl, of a 'fierce and courageous temper' which led her into sad scrapes ..."

After having been disinherited by her father for her elopement with James Bonny, and following burning down his plantation in revenge, the couple found their way to a pirates lair in New Providence in the Bahamas. And thus began Anne's rise to infamy!

If you've never read her story, you should take the time to find out about her. She was ruthless and fierce and inspires all sorts of romantic flights of fancy.

She was a blast to work on. Be sure to see the detail image below!
